When you are admitted to the hospital, your care may be managed by a hospitalist. A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients during their hospital stay. Most hospitalists are board-certified in internal medicine and have completed the same rigorous training as other
physicians, including medical school, residency and board certification. Some may also come from family medicine or sub-specialties such as pulmonology or nephrology.
Because they are based in the hospital, hospitalists are available throughout the day to closely monitor your condition, respond quickly to changes, review test results as they become available and communicate directly
with your care team. In many cases, they may visit more than once a day to ensure your care is progressing as expected and to keep you and your family informed.
