Quality Initiatives are under the direction of the Grady Memorial Hospital Performance
Improvement Council. Below is a brief description of the Council’s objectives and focus.
Also shown are the most recent comparisons of Surgical Quality Indicators for the Hospital
from Hospital Compare - A quality tool provided by Medicare.

Objectives

• To develop and integrate, hospital-wide Performance Improvement and Patient Safety
Programs.

• To objectively and systematically measure and evaluate the quality, appropriateness, and
safety of patient care on an ongoing basis.

• To identify, report, analyze, and manage unanticipated outcomes and/or events for the
purpose of preventing similar events from occurring again.

• To pursue opportunities to improve patient care/services and patient safety.

• To resolve identified problems.

• To integrate the performance improvement and patient safety program into ongoing operational
activities.

• To modify, when necessary, the performance improvement and patient safety program
to encourage improved identification and solution of problems that significantly affect patient
care and patient safety.

• To insure that all performance improvement and patient safety activities are coordinated
and integrated to avoid duplication of effort.

Scope

The performance improvement/patient safety program involves physicians, nurses,
pharmacists, ancillary services, administrators, directors, managers, staff, contracted
services, and clinics. The performance improvement/patient safety program focuses on
improving key functions within individual departments and the organization as a whole.

Surgical Care Improvement Project

(within one hour before surgery) to help prevent infection

The rates displayed in this graph are from data reported for discharges July 2007 through June 2008.

Why is this Important?
Surgical wound infections can be prevented. Medical research shows that surgery patients who
get antibiotics within the hour before their surgery are less likely to get wound infections. Getting
an antibiotic earlier, or after surgery begins, is not as effective. Hospital staff should make sure
surgery patients get antibiotics at the right time. Higher percentages are better.
