Patient Safety Awareness

Grady Memorial Hospital promotes Patient Safety Awareness for improving patient safety in
hospitals and healthcare organizations.

“We encourage patients to become more involved in their own health care as well as working
with our staff to promote safe care,” said Cathy Groseclose, Vice-President for Patient Care
Services at Grady Memorial Hospital. “These simple guidelines below can help you, help us
improve you health care.”

• Speak up if you have questions or concerns and, if you don't understand, ask again. It's your
body and your have a right to know.

• Pay attention to the care you are receiving. Make sure you're getting the right treatments and
medications by the right healthcare professionals. Don't assume anything.

• Educate yourself about your diagnosis, the medical tests you are undergoing, and your treatment
plan.

• Ask a trusted family member or friend to be your advocate.

• Know what medications you take and why you take them.

• Participate in all decisions about your treatment. You are the center of the healthcare team.

Other factors important to patient safety include:

• Ridding your medicine cabinets of old or expired medications.

• Bringing your medications to your doctor or pharmacist for review on your next visit.

• Obtaining copies of all your healthcare records and keeping them in a safe place.

• Writing down and carrying with you a copy of all of your prescription and over the counter
medications (including doses), as well as any allergies.

• Writing down and carrying with you the names and numbers of all of your healthcare providers
and pharmacies.

• Identifying an advocate (either family member or friend) who can accompany you and ask
questions on your behalf.

• Talking with your family or other close individuals about what your preferences are for your
healthcare, in case you are unable to speak for yourself.

• Communicating with your providers about your healthcare safety concerns.

If you have any doubt, ask your hospital or healthcare professional about patient safety, and how
communication and partnership between you and your providers can be improved.
