NURSE EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

 Criteria For Nurse Extern I:

1.      Classified as a senior nursing student (with a minimum of 2 semesters of clinical course work in a registered nurses program).

2.      Must remain a full-time student and provide verification of enrollment.

3.      Must maintain a GPA of 2.5.

4.      Current BLS

5.      Letter from nursing faculty:

a.      Good standing

b.      Expected date of graduation

c.      Faculty’s recommendation for student to participate in this program

6.      Typed essay stating why you want to be in this program.

7.      Completed GMH application and meet all Human Resources employment requirements.

8.      Pay rate will be level Y.

 Upon Graduation / Nurse Extern II:

1.      Must sit for State Boards within 30 days of graduation.

2.      Any breach of the above stated terms and the agreement will be null and void.

3.      Notification of the date to sit boards will be given to the Nurse Manager.  The Nurse extern will move into the RN pay bracket on the date the Nurse Manager is notified of the date to sit boards.  If the Extern does not sit and/or pass boards, this agreement is immediately null and void and a position is not guaranteed.

4.      Pay rate will be level Z.

 Scope of Practice:

The Oklahoma Board of Nursing states that “a Registered Nurse is directly responsible at all times or the ‘nurse tech’ (nurse extern), who is functioning as an unlicensed person within that defined scope of practice.”  After evaluation of competency the Nurse Extern is allowed to perform all the duties of a nursing assistant as well as other technical duties which have been learned in a nursing education program for which competency has been validated by a faculty member.

Nurse Extern Job Description

Job Summary:

Under the immediate supervision of a Registered Nurse, provides general nursing care and coordinates patient care for a group of patients.  Cares for infants through geriatric age groups.  After evaluation of competency, the Nurse Extern is allowed to perform all the duties of a nursing assistant as well as other technical duties which have been learned in a nursing education program for which competency has been validated by a faculty member.

 Job Duties:

  1. Systematically evaluates the health care needs of individuals:  appropriate for specific age groups and patient conditions.  (Under the immediate supervision of the RN).
    1. Initiates comprehensive physical evaluation and screening
    2. Obtains and reviews past and current health history

 

  1. Initiates patient care by applying an individualized Care Plan reflecting the current and changing patient status while involving patient and/or family.  (Under the immediate supervision of the RN)
    1. Sets goals, applies appropriate nursing interventions to meet goals and the special needs of the patient and enlists the assistance of various team members as appropriate.
    2. Incorporates discharge planning in the plan of care.

 

  1. Intervenes by providing direct patient care and using competent nursing judgment and actions.  (Under the direct supervision of the RN).
    1. Recommends appropriate nursing interventions and treatments and implements appropriate interventions.
    2. Evaluates the patient response to medication and treatments and implements appropriate interventions.
    3. Recognizes physical and mental changes in patient condition, responds promptly and competently to prevent negative patient outcomes.
    4. Serve as patient advocate by defending and preserving the rights, dignity, privacy and property of the patient.
